Caroline Duchatelet’s works focus on light and landscape. She started as a sculptor, does installations and since three years has been dedicating herself to video. She was a resident at Villa Medicis in Roma in 2009 and prolonged her journey in Italy through Lazio, Basilicata, Apuglia, Lipari Iles, Umbria and Sicily where she did a series of films on landscape from which are extracted photogram stills that either belong to series or come individually.
"Caroline Duchatelet has filmed dawns in Italy. Doing so is welcoming the birth of the visible as progressive appearance of day light reveals the world’s substance and its lines. The video time and the ongoing metamorphosis of the image reveal the extreme plasticity of the visible, its infinite power of appearance and fading, of figuration and distortion. Caroline Duchatelet’s gesture is a ritual of welcome and attention, a still ceremony each dawn repeated. Choose a place and a frame and let light do in silence. What happens in the image is not quite an epiphany nor a revelation because light does not unveil or fix a definitive image, it modules the infinite variation of the sensible and presides over the immanent games of line and colour, surface and depth."
